Current Status,Challenges and Perspectives of Paper Waste Biological Treatment Technologies

Abstract: Paper waste is rich in cellulose, hemicellulose and nutrients, which can be bio-converted to energy and resources, while simultaneously reduce the environmental pollution caused by improper disposal. The implementation of suitable pretreatment technology is a crucial path in ensuring the effective bioconversion of paper waste, which has the potential to significantly enhance the bioconversion efficiency of paper waste. While it is important to develop an appropriate route for the full-scale bioconversion of paper waste to maximize energy/resource recovery and minimize waste generation. Therefore, a comprehensive and systematic analysis of the current bioconversion technology of paper waste was carried out. Based on this, an innovative bioconversion route applicable to the treatment of paper waste was proposed and the economic feasibility and environmental sustainability were comprehensive analysed. Finally, the directions forward of paper waste bioconversion technology was also prospected.
